A Logical Theory of Truthmakers and Falsitymakers
نویسنده
چکیده
The thing in question is aptly called a truthmaker. To date, no one really knows what such a thing may be. In the 1980s three seminal publications appeared, which put truthmakers and truthmaking at center stage. These were the 1984 paper ‘Truth-Makers’, by Kevin Mulligan, Peter Simons, and Barry Smith; the 1987 paper ‘Truthmaker’ by John Fox; and the 1988 discussion of truthmakers by John Bigelow in Part III of his book The Reality of Numbers. The field is now well served by the two recent anthologies Beebee and Dodd [2005] and Lowe and Rami

Truthmakers (are indexed combinations)
My aim is to show that theories which try to construct truthmakers out of objects and properties/relations alone are not tenable: e Frege-Wittgenstein idea of incompleteness does not yield truthmakers. Armstrong’s theory of partial identity and the theory of moments, i.e., of non-transferable properties, yield truthmakers, but these theories have counter-intuitive consequences. I conclude that ...
متن کاملArmstrong’s Truth and Truthmakers
In section one I outline the project of Armstrong‟s book Truth and Truthmakers. In section two I make some observations about the relation of this project to various theories of truth and to realism. In section three I present Armstrong‟s response to one of the toughest challenges to his thesis that every truth has a truthmaker: the challenge of finding truthmakers for negative truths and gener...

Innovation and evolution in sciences needs to its own logical methodology. This paper, considering the necessity of evolution in sciences, has intended to establish a theory called the theory of observation. It would be counted as a model for the philosophies of with a logico-historical approach. Following the purpose, the author has explained technical terms such as research method, theory,...
متن کاملReducing belief simpliciter to degrees of belief
We prove that given reasonable assumptions, it is possible to give an explicit definition of belief simpliciter in terms of subjective probability, such that it is neither the case that belief is stripped of any of its usual logical properties, nor is it the case that believed propositions are bound to have probability 1. Belief simpliciter is not to be eliminated in favour of degrees of belief...

Lack of attention to the philosophy of architecture as an intermediate science between general philosophy and architecture science has caused many researchers to link their research to philosophy without methodology. They introduce their research as the philosophy of Islamic architecture; While the philosophy of Islamic architecture is a kind of philosophy. The general philosophy merely provide...
